WARRINGTON Town turned party-poopers as they toppled newly crowned champions Curzon Ashton with a thrilling 2-3 victory which included a wonder goal from Scott Metcalfe against his former club.
Warrington twice came from behind thanks to two goals from Ciaran Kilheeney, including a penalty in the first half to make it 1-1 and a near post header in the second half to level at 2-2.
Then with the game finely balanced Metcalfe lobbed the keeper from 40 yards in the 72nd minute to claim a famous victory against the newly crowned Champions who were presented with the league trophy after the final whistle.
The victory kept Warrington on course for the play-offs and their own promotion dream alive.
Warrington provided a guard of honour to applaud the newly crowned champions out on to the pitch and it wasn’t long before the hosts were in front when skipper Sam Walker curled in a free kick after just seven minutes.
Playing against the wind made life difficult for Warrington but they were back on level terms within five minutes when Chris Gahgan went down in the box allowing Kilheeney to calmly send the keeper the wrong way from the penalty spot to make it 1-1.
Warrington had a great chance to take the lead when Metcalfe crossed to Carlos Meakin who fired over the bar.
Then on 30 minutes Curzon’s Matty Warburton hit the post. Three minutes later Meakin was shown a yellow card for a strong tackle and from the resulting free kick Chris Young headed home to make it 2-1 at the break.
With the wind behind them Warrington took the game to the hosts and were eventually rewarded when a David Mannix corner was headed home at the near post by Kilheeney to make it 2-2.
Warrington now had the momentum and looked the most likely to score and did so in the 72 minute when Metcalfe scored a contender for goal of the season, lobbing Hakan Burton in the Curzon goal from 40 yards.
Town then dug deep to hold on for a famous victory to keep their play-off hopes and promotion dream alive.
