MP steps into contract row between Asda and its staff

WARRINGTON North MP Helen Jones has stepped into the long-running row between Asda and its employees over contract changes.
She said: “I am concerned that Asda is leaving their staff with no choice other than to accept these contracts or risk losing their jobs.
“Those with caring commitments could be severely affected by any loss in flexibility.
“This is a dreadful position to be put in and I believe Asda should think again. I’m sure shoppers would be horrified to know that Asda are behaving in this way.”
The issue has been long running but is due to come to a head in the coming weeks as Asda staff are forced to sign changes to their contracts which will see them lose out on flexibility and holidays.
Staff fear that the new contract, which would see employees asked to work any time, any place and anywhere with only four weeks’ notice, will create less secure and more vulnerable employment as it doesn’t take into account childcare, caring, studying, family and other outside work commitments.
The GMB union have confirmed that Asda have stated that any workers unwilling to agree and accept the proposed contract could potentially be served notice.
Asda claim that 95 per cent of their employees will receive pay increases as a result of the changes
