A ROOFER who tried to steal lead worth £3,000 from the roof of a Warrington primary school was jailed for 12 months.
Leon Snelson, 24, tried to avoid being identified by bending the mounting of a CCTV camera so that it pointed at the sky, Warrington Crown Court was told.
Snelson, formerly of Warrington but now living in Oxfordshire, admitted theft of lead flashing from the roof of St Benedict’s RC Primary School at Orford.
David Jones, prosecuting, said Snelson and another man, yet to appear in court, were caught on the school roof by police.
Snelson tried to escape by scrambling down but was found hiding behind a wall.
Police discovered the CCTV camera had been bent so that it pointed at the sky.
Santa Mera, defending, said Snelson had been out drinking before climbing the roof and attempting to remove the lead
He had now moved away from the Warrington area in an attempt to lead a life without crime and now had a full-time job as a roofer.
Judge David Hale told the defendant: “Those who pinch lead from roofs are going to be punished. You were found on the roof of a school trying to remove £3,000 worth of lead.”
