WHEN she retired from her job as Assistant Principal at Warrington Collegiate, local author, Pat Kitto, promised to write a book about her 30 years’ experience of working in Further Education.
Her first novel “Forever Friends?” lifts the lid on what life was like for young ambitious women in the 1980s and 1990s as they strove to climb the academic ladder in what was then a very male-dominated work environment where the Engineers ‘ruled the roost’ and all the bosses were male.
This is illustrated by actual examples of how women in Further Education had to deal with both gender discrimination and unsolicited patronage, which often meant having to turn a blind eye to the occasional hand on the leg or even the breast!
The central story line is a fictional one, centring around the 30-year friendship of four women dealing with many personal issues including adultery, addiction and domestic violence as well as betrayal and murder.
However, the background story is such that it provides a flavour of what life was really like for those working in Further Education in those long-gone days of the old Warrington Tech!
