Four wicket cup triumph

GRAPPENHALL triumphed by four wickets against Premier division side Widnes in the Right Move Abroad Cheshire County League cup competition.
Widnes chose to bat first at Broad Lane and scored 152 in their 20 overs, after being given a steady start by former Grappenhall player James McCoy.Worley was Grappenhall’s most effective bowler, conceding only 19 runs from his four overs.
Former Lancashire player Richard Green made Widnes pay for an early dropped catch to score 52 quick runs, well supported by Will Sharp, 21 and Grappenhall end up on 153-6.
In the league, a below strength Grappenhall travelled to Marple missing both openers and skipper Steve Titchard. They were asked to bat first on an under-prepared wicket and were dismissed for 76 with only three men reaching double figures.
Marple also found conditions difficult at 7-2 and for a time Grappenhall sensed the possibility of an unlikely victory. But Marple’s later batsmen, realising the poor state of the wicket, hit out to take them to their modest target.
Grappenhall 2nd entertained Heaton Mersey at Broad Lane and were asked to bat first.
Adam Roylance, 26 and Dean Langhorne, 28 got them off to a good start while valuable 45 from veteran Mike Holden enabled them to set a challenging score of 166.
The visitors were soon in trouble on 32-5 but then dug in with the obvious intention of holding out for a draw. But after a break through and another mini-revival Grappenhall eventually secured victory by 70 runs.
Hards ended up with 3-16 while Wright, Edgerton and M Titchard took two wickets each.
Grappenhall 2nd also won in the cup competition, defeating Bollington after amassing a formidable 221, with Ian Barnes top scoring with 55. Bollington made a good start but fell behind the clock and were eventually bowled out for 132.
Grappenhall traveled to Poynton with a very weakened team with only nine men, including 60 year old Mike Tyerman and two Under 13’s.
They batted first and were soon in trouble at 42 for 5,. Paul Tyerman joining his father, Mike, at the crease. Both batsmen played with some freedom as they were the last of the recognized batsmen and runs were needed now or never. They built up a quick partnership of over 50, with father falling for 26 (including slapping a 14 year old spinner for a straight 6) and son being the last man out for a spirited 44. The innings ended on 118.
With bowling options in short supply, Paul Tyerman and Jamie Edgington opened the attack, and kept the runs down to a steady trickle. Poynton never really looked in any trouble however, with gaps in the field and reached their target for the loss of two wickets, Steve Guest taking his first wicket in senior cricket.
Warrington’s unbeaten run in the league came to an end when they went down by eight wickets
against Cheadle Hulme.
A below strength Warrington were held to 112-9, with opener Kirby top scoring with 28. Only some defiant batting by
last pair Simon Batey, 19 not out and Paul Agar, six not out, took them into three figures.
Cheadle Hulme cruised to 114-2.
In the Meller Braggins Cheshire League, Lymm Oughtrington Park enjoyed a comfortable win over visiting Barnton.
Batting first Lymm totalled 187, Scholes 70, Garner 58. Barnton were dismissed for 131.
Stretton suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of Cheadle Hulme Ladybridge, who declared at 179-8. Stretton
were tumbled out for 89.
In the Cheshire Alliance, Appleton suffered a six wicket defeat at home at the hands of Disley.
Appleton were dismissed for 111 and the visitors cantered to victory with 112-4.
Glazebury chalked up a massive 10 wicket victory at Saughall where the home side were dismissed for 154 with paceman Dave Acton taking 5-32. Glazebury reached 155-0 with Dave Mason making 83 not out and Wayne Hargreaves 56 not out.
At Hurst Lane, Glazebury 2nd went down by 86 runs against Hartford. The visitors scored 156 all out despite good bowling by Stewart Caller, 5-41 and Michael Nutkins, 4-34. But Glazebury were then tumbled out for 70, main contributions coming from opener Alan
Major, 22 and Callum Morgan, 24.
Appleton 2nd travelled to Knutsford and won by a massive 153 runs. Appleton scored 217-6 with Steve Reece making 106. Knutsford were then dismissed for 64 with Ryan Swart taking 4-14.
Women’s cricket
Champions Chester Boughton Hall showed Appleton no mercy, bundling their opponents out for 63 before completing a ten wicket win inside 15 overs.
Annette Axon was the star bowler with 4-7, before Ali Cutler (29 not out) and Vicky Latham (24 not out) finished the job.
