Riverside blaze test for fire crews

FIRE crews had to wade through mud and cross a railway and a canal to deal with a serious grass fire in an almost inaccessible riverside area at Warrington.
Cause of the fire, which affected a large area of grassland on the banks of the Mersey near the Ferry Inn, Fiddler’s Ferry, is not known.
But it took crews a considerable time to reach the scene due to various obstacles which prevent fire engines from gaining access.
A Fire Service spokesman said: “The fire was between the sewage works at Sankey Bridges and the Ferry Inn.
It was on a piece of land between the Mersey and the railway and the Sankey Canal.
“There was no immediate danger to property but it was quite an extensive fire.”
In a separate incident, firefighters dealt with a blaze involving two large, abandoned mattresses near a tennis court at Rudlow Court, Padgate.
