Fond farewell to former Mayor

GUARDS of honour from the Grenadier Guards and the Fire Service were present at the funeral of former Mayor of Warrington Ted Lafferty today.

All Saints Church, Thelwall was packed with mourners for the service – and others had to stand outside.

A fire engine led the funeral cortege and as piper Don Mackenzie from the Warrington Juvenile Pipe Band, played a lament as Coun Lafferty was laid to rest next to his son, who died tragically in Australia during his father’s year as Mayor.

The Liberal Democrat councillor died on Wednesday last week after a lengthy battle with cancer.

But he carried on with his Town Hall duties to the end, attending council meetings and dealing with constituents in his Grappenhall and Thelwall ward.

Coun Lafferty, aged 71, had been a borough councillor for 21 years and a member of Grappenhall and Thelwall Parish Council for a quarter of a century. He was a member and former chairman of Cheshire Fire Authority.

He was Warrington’s first Liberal Democrat Mayor in 2004-05. During his year of office he and his wife, Pat, who was Mayoress, raised nearly £30,000 for charity through the Mayor’s charity appeal.

Donations in memory of Coun Lafferty were in aid of Warrington Disability Partnership and the respiratory department at Warrington Hospital.
The many mourners included current Mayor Celia Jordan, council colleagues and officers of the council, past and present.

  1. Ted was a good friend throughout his time on Warrington Borough Council, especially when he was Mayor. Many fond memories.

He was a great supporter of our work and will be sadly missed.
