WARRINGTON Borough Council has been accused of trying to “cash in” on the more affluent areas of the town – even when it comes to issue parking tickets.
Figures provided by the council itself, strongly suggest that south Warrington is a target when parking tickets or Penalty Charge Notices are being issued, according to Cllr Brian Axcell, from Appleton.
The Liberal Democrat transportation spokesman (pictured) said last year, one third of all the 13,180 tickets in the borough were issued south of the Manchester Ship Canal.
A total of 7,011 tickets were issued outside of the town centre and the figure of 4,393 for south Warrington represents more than 60 per cent of these.
Cllr Axcell said: “I cannot believe that motorists in south Warrington are any less responsible when parking than those in the other areas of the town but they are picking up many, many more parking penalties.
“As with car park charges it seems that the Council is trying to cash in on the south.”
The Liberal Democrats have previously complained about the fact that the only council-owned pay-and-display car parks in the borough are in the south.

It is not a case of more cars per family in the affluent south compared to more usage of public transport in the less fashionable areas?
It’s a direct result of the traffic wardens camping out at the pay and display car parks (which, as pointed, out only exist in the south of the borough) and slapping a ticket on anything that goes 1 minute over time or is parked with a wheel on the virtually invisible white lines.
Doing their jobs then.
