SOLDIERS from a Warrington based Territorial Army Engineer Regiment are to be honoured with the Freedom of the town on Armed Forces Day this weekend.
The men and women of 75 Engineer Regiment (Volunteers) are to be recognised for the unit’s “outstanding service”.
A ceremony and parade through Warrington centre will take place on Saturday, from 10.15am at the Town Hall.
The parade will end at Queens Gardens in Palmyra Square where the Freedom of the Borough of Warrington will be presented.
Soldiers from the Regiment who have recently returned from operations in Afghanistan will also be presented with their medals by the Mayor, Cllr Peter Carey.
The parade is to be supported by the Band of the Corps of Royal Engineers which will conduct a musical display after the presentations.
Lieutenant Colonel Al Veitch, Commanding Officer of 75 Engineer Regiment, added: “It is a tremendous honour for the Regiment to receive the Freedom of the Borough of Warrington. Warrington has a very long association with the military and has always been supportive of both its serving and veteran communities.
“As the only Army unit that is actually based in the heart of Warrington in the historic Peninsula Barracks, having a close connection with our local borough and our community is key and we are extremely proud to have had this bestowed on us.
“The parade is an opportunity for us to say thank you to Warrington for all the support its people give to us, our families and the wider military community. The parade also recognises the recent commitment made by our soldiers in Afghanistan and having their medals presented makes it an even more special occasion.”
