SEVEN members of Warrington VIP experienced the thrill of getting behind the wheel at a special driving day at Three Sisters Race Circuit in Wigan, proving that visual impairment is no barrier to trying something new.
The day was filled with huge smiles, excitement and even a few tears of joy as members got behind the wheel and experienced the thrill of driving.
And, in the words of Warrington VIP: “They only went and bloody smashed it!”
The memorable day came about after Jean Mann, one of the charity’s longest-standing members, asked whether it would be possible to organise such an experience.
The team took up the challenge, setting the wheels in motion to make her wish a reality.
Jean was certainly glad she asked. She said: “Just brilliant, absolutely amazing! Getting in the car was the first time in years I’d had me leg over!! The team helping on the day were brilliant, and I can’t wait to do it again!!”
Fellow member Phil Pimitel also described the experience as special, saying: “It was wonderful to feel back in control.”
The event was made possible by Speed of Sight, a charity which provides people with disabilities, including those with visual impairments, the opportunity to experience driving in a safe and controlled environment.
For the Warrington VIP members, it was about much more than driving a car. It was an opportunity to experience the freedom of trying something new, challenge perceived limitations and create memories to treasure.
Warrington VIP thanked the Speed of Sight team for making its members feel welcome and helping to deliver such a special day. The charity also praised Jean for making the initial request that got the wheels in motion.
And anyone worrying about Warrington’s traffic can rest assured the members were not let loose on the public highway!

Following the success of the day, however, it would be little surprise if some were already asking when they could get behind the wheel again.
Warrington VIP believes everyone deserves the opportunity to try new things, enjoy themselves and make the most of life. Its activities range from friendly get-togethers over lunch to new experiences such as the racetrack adventure.
