A WARRINGTON entrepreneur and former Warrington Wolves winger has turned an emergency at Creamfields into a feel-good story after helping a group of festival-goers get their weekend back on track.
Jamie Boyd, founder and managing director of Warrington-based same-day courier company Today Team, received an unusual late-night call after a worried father searched online for help when his daughter and her friends ran into trouble on their journey to the festival.
Their luggage was being towed behind their minibus in a trailer when disaster struck – with the trailer splitting open on the motorway and their bags, tents and other belongings scattered across the road.
Thankfully, Highways officers recovered the possessions and took them somewhere safe.
But that still left the youngsters without their festival kit.
That’s when Jamie and the Today Team stepped in.
Jamie explained: “A distressed dad found us on Google after his daughter and her friends were travelling to Creamfields by minibus.”
He said: “Their luggage was following behind in a trailer, which unfortunately split open on the motorway, leaving bags, tents and everything else scattered across the road.”
After Highways recovered the belongings, Today Team arranged to collect them and get them to the festival.
“Collected, loaded and delivered to a very grateful group of friends at Creamfields, all within 2 hours of the original phone call,” Jamie said.
And while it might not have been the kind of job Today Team normally gets called upon to handle, Jamie believes the circumstances made it every bit as urgent as a typical time-critical business delivery.
“Not our usual B2B time-critical delivery…” he wrote.
“But if you’re at a festival with no tent, clothes or luggage for the weekend, I’d say it definitely qualifies as urgent.”
The speedy rescue also earned Today Team a five-star Google review from the grateful father.
Jamie shared the review, which said: “Quick and efficient service – items collected and delivered within 2 hours of making the initial enquiry.”
For Jamie, it was another example of the simple philosophy which has helped build Today Team from a one-man operation into a multi-million-pound Warrington business.
The company was founded by Jamie in 2005 after a serious knee injury brought his professional rugby league career with Warrington Wolves to a premature end. He used a £3,000 loan from The Prince’s Trust to lease his first van and start the business.
Twenty years later, Today Team operates from Taylor Business Park and has grown into a nationwide same-day courier and logistics operation, with up to 70 drivers on the road on any given day.
Jamie has previously told Warrington Worldwide that when his rugby career was ended he wanted to “look forward to the future, not ponder what could have been.”
This latest episode shows that, even as the business has grown considerably, the personal approach which helped establish it remains very much at the heart of the operation.
And for one group of Creamfields festival-goers, a weekend which could have been ruined by a motorway mishap was saved by a Warrington courier who was prepared to go the extra mile.
As Jamie put it in his post, after successfully completing the rescue: “Let’s see what bank holiday Friday brings.”
