Edwards header earns Warrington Town away win

WARRINGTON Town’s fine away record this season continued with a 1-0 win away at Bamber Bridge.

Callum Edwards headed home in the eighth minute as the Yellows put their home frustrations behind them to secure a fifth win from six on the road.

The second half, which saw a delay due to a spectator falling ill in the crowd, ended in controversy as Brig felt a handball on the edge of the box should have been a penalty and then they saw Ashton Cookson sent off for a lunge on Jack Goodwin.

Ben Elliott, fresh from scoring his first goal for the Yellows at the weekend, thought he had a dream start inside two minutes when he clinically disposed a through ball, only to be denied by the offside flag.

But the Yellows didn’t have to wait long for a goal, Elliott linking up with the excellent Goodwin and crossing over for Edwards to glance a header in to the corner for his fourth goal of the season.

Goodwin and Elliott then combined again as Goodwin beat his man in the box and clipped up a ball to the back post that Elliott couldn’t quite divert home.

A teasing ball in by Josh Doherty was then just beyond Goodwin before Reece Daly nearly scored the goal of the season with a vicious curling left-foot shot as he ran away from goal surrounded by three Brig defenders.

A 20 minute delay at half-time due to a fan needing attention in the crowd meant both sides had a mini warm-up before the second half, and the all-action Bobby Bjork came close to doubling the lead on 51 minutes.

Bjork shot straight at the keeper as the changes then started without really influencing the game too much, Temi Ajibola proving a handful up front but Brig never really carved out a clear opening.

There were ironic cheers when the Yellows were awarded a free-kick on 84 minutes after a raft of puzzling decisions, only for manager Paul Carden to booked in the same incident.

Doherty was then booked for delaying the taking of a free-kick, before the big talking point came when Evan Gumbs threw his body to block a Jamie Allan drive from 25 yards. He seemed to be in the box but the referee decided that he was on the edge and that it was handful.

Jack Baxter chipped a free kick over the wall that Mateusz Hewelt tipped over the bar, and then as the Yellows broke from the resulting corner, Cookson chopped down Goodwin and was shown a straight red.

It was the best possible start to Warrington’s run of six away league games in seven.
