Family keep the spirit of traditional Warrington Walking Day alive

THE spirit of Warrington Walking Day stood firm as five dedicated sisters and their brother took to the streets today, Friday, to keep the town’s historic tradition marching forward.

Sisters Patricia, Pauline, Maria, Bernadette, and Carmel (née McKeown), alongside their brother Patrick McKeown, refused to let the historic community highlight fade.
Stepping out as the proud vanguard of the event, the McKeown siblings represented decades of local heritage.
The family’s walk maintained the classic hallmarks of the historic event.

The procession officially commenced from Bank Park at exactly 10:30 am. Three traditional pipers led the way, filling the park and town centre with music.
Approximately three dozen community walkers joined the family along the route.
Warrington Walking Day has brought the community together since its founding by its original creators in 1834. While broader participation has shifted over the generations, the McKeown family’s walk ensures that the values of community unity, tradition, and local pride remain firmly active in the heart of Warrington.

The McKeown family’s poignant march serves as the perfect prelude to “Walking Day Reborn – Standing Together in Faith,” a massive, reimagined community festival taking place tomorrow, Saturday, 4 July 2026.
The official, nearly 200-year-old traditional parade was cancelled after Warrington Borough Council was forced to pull direct funding due to a financial crisis.
In response, local church leaders, residents, and community groups banded together to form the Walking Day Reborn Group to ensure the town’s cultural identity survives.
Tomorrow’s free event completely transforms Bank Park and the Warrington Town Hall grounds into a vibrant community hub from 10:00 am until 4:00 pm.
The new format bridges heritage with family-focused entertainment. Opening Prayers take place at 10 am led by Rev Anne Dowdeswell of St Elphin’s Parish Church.
This will be followed by a spectacular parade showcasing the town’s historic, intricately crafted faith banners.
The procession will be accompanied by the Warrington Brass Band and observed by the Mayor of Warrington, Cllr Sagheer Zaman. Attendees wanting to watch the banner parade are urged to arrive by 10:00 am.
Main-stage performances will feature the Rhythm of Warrington Drummers, the House of Living Bread Choir, The Day of Renewal Fellowship Choir, the One Voice Many Tongues Choir (St James), and the Salvation Army Choir and Brass Band.
The event will conclude with a mass community sing-along of popular hymns led by the Salvation Army.
Beyond the music, Bank Park will host the Silcox Fun Fair running all day. Visitors can buy traditional afternoon teas or enjoy homemade cakes, sandwiches, and savouries inside the Town Hall Tea Room. For those looking to reminisce, Warrington Museum is hosting a Historic Memories Desk. Organisers invite residents to bring down their old photographs, personal recollections, and stories to help preserve the rich history of Warrington Walking Day for future generations.
