Council task groups may be disbanded

TOWN Hall chiefs at Warrington are being recommended to disband a number of task groups set up over the years to support the borough council’s cabinet in carrying out its functions and responsibilities.

A report to be presented to the cabinet on June 8 by council leader Cclr Hans Mundry (pictured) will ask members to consider whether there is still a need for the groups or whether their work can be carried out in a more effective manner.
It recommends that the devolution, refugee, Section 106, and waste strategy task groups and the extreme weather board be disbanded and their work incorporated into the responsibilities of the council’s appropriate overview and scrutiny committee.

Two other groups, the corporate parenting forum and the councillor development forum, should be re-appointed, however, while a review of the council’s constitution is carried out with a view to them being incorporated into the council’s governance arrangements.
Task groups report directly to the cabinet and are not normally held in public, although the cabinet can authorise their meetings to be open to the press and public.
There are also a number of champions/ambassadors who support the cabinet and it is recommended that they be retained for the coming year.
None of the task groups met more than five times last year and some did not meet at all.
