Council leader says cabinet will make decision on future of Woolston Hub after considering all options

WARRINGTON Borough Council Leader Hans Mundry says the Cabinet will make a decision on the future of Woolston Hub after reviewing the consultation feedback and considering all options, including a private investor.

It follows the Campaign group responding to the Council Leader, stating a private investor was an option for Woolston Hub, during a recent interview with Warrington Worldwide.

A spokesperson for the Woolston Hub campaign group said: “We note the Leader’s statement that reopening Woolston Hub would rely on securing an investor.
“If that is the Council’s position, it makes it even more important that they engage directly with the community group that has consistently stepped forward with a constructive and solutions-focused approach.
“From the outset, we have made clear our willingness to be part of the solution — including exploring viable options for the Hub’s future.
“In this context, clear and transparent costings are more important than ever. Any credible investment conversation must be based on accurate evidenced figures, alongside a robust and proactive approach to maintenance and compliance.
“This includes ensuring that essential preventative maintenance is in place and that known issues are addressed through timely and cost-effective interventions where these have already been identified.
“We would also ask why the Council is moving directly towards an investor-led approach without first clearly setting out how existing funding routes — such as Section 106 contributions — and other delivery options have been fully explored.
“Above all, this is a valued community asset which must be protected for local people. If the Council is no longer best placed to act as its long-term guardian, then alternative models — including parish-level stewardship or partnership approaches — should be openly considered to safeguard its future.
“What should be avoided is any approach that risks losing the Hub’s community value through a purely commercial transfer.
“It is therefore disappointing that, for a second time, this conversation is being played out in the press rather than through direct and transparent dialogue.
“We remain ready to meet at any time and would welcome the opportunity to work collaboratively in the best interests of the community.
“Woolston Hub’s future deserves open, honest, and proactive engagement.”
In response Council leader Cllr. Hans Mundry said: “We are currently reviewing the consultation feedback in detail and equally giving consideration to all possible options. As previously mentioned, securing an investor could be a potential option. We will continue to assess all potential avenues and any final decision will be made by Cabinet.”
