Get ready for new food waste collection service

RESIDENTS are being encouraged to get their caddies ready in preparation for the launch of Warrington’s new food waste collection service on March 31.

The new service is being introduced in line with government requirements for all local authorities across the country to collect food waste separately.
Food waste collections will take place weekly, with no change to the collection of black bins:
• Food Waste: Collected every week, based on the day your black bin is collected.
• Black Bins: Will continue to be collected fortnightly.
The borough council is providing fully biodegradable caddy liners. Once collected, the food waste is transported to a specialist facility where it is converted into biogas and nutrient-rich fertiliser for the farming industry.
All food scraps, fruit and vegetable peelings, meat and fish bones, tea bags, and coffee grounds can be placed in the new caddies – but not packaging of any kind, liquids (such as milk or oil), or garden waste.
For more information, including a comprehensive list of what can and cannot be recycled, visit the dedicated food waste web page at www.warrington.gov.uk/foodwaste.

Cllr John Kerr Brown, Warrington Borough Council’s cabinet member responsible for waste and recycling, said: “Recycling food waste is a government requirement and a key part of increasing our overall recycling rates and reducing our environmental impact.
“Currently, food waste makes up around 40 per cent of the weight in general waste bins. By diverting this, we can reduce disposal costs and reinvest those savings into other essential services.
“Recycling our food waste brings a range of benefits—reducing landfill, producing renewable energy and fertiliser, and minimizing greenhouse gas emissions. All of this contributes to a cleaner, more sustainable Warrington. We’ve been working hard to ensure the rollout runs as smoothly as possible, and we ask residents to help us by filling their caddies starting next week.”
The majority of households should have received their new caddies by now. Anyone who has not received theirs should report it online as soon as possible to ensure they are ready for the March 31 launch.
