Council celebrating Social Work Week

THIS week is Social Work Week (16-20 March) and Warrington Borough Council is celebrating the important role of those working in social work.

Social Work Week is a celebration of those who choose to pursue a career in social work, and recognises the positive impact that social workers can have on individuals, families and communities.

The council has social work career opportunities across adults and children’s services, with routes into these careers including apprenticeships and training opportunities. We also offer senior roles for those looking to return to the sector or progress further in their social work career.

Cllr Maureen McLaughlin, cabinet member for statutory health and adult social care, said: “Adult social work is all about helping people live as independently and confidently as possible, and our teams do this with real care every single day. It’s a role that makes such a difference to people’s lives, and World Social Work Week is a great chance to recognise the kindness, commitment and hard work shown by our social workers across Warrington.”
Cllr Matt Smith, cabinet member for children’s services, said: “Working in children’s social work is incredibly rewarding. Every day, our teams support children, young people and their families through some of their most important moments, helping them stay safe and thrive. We’re proud of the passion and dedication they bring to their roles, and World Social Work Week is a lovely opportunity to celebrate everything they do.”
To help encourage others to pursue a career in social work, some of the council’s “brilliant” social workers in adult social care have shared their thoughts on what a career in social work means to them:

“I am proud to be a social worker in Warrington. I first started working here in 1999, beginning my career as a support worker. Over the years, I have worked in a variety of roles and teams, and these opportunities eventually led to me being successful on the social work apprenticeship. This journey has given me a broad range of experience and many chances to grow. I bring my life experience to the role, which has strengthened my passion for supporting people living with dementia and their families. Throughout all my roles, I have been supported by great management and strong leadership. There has always been flexibility and a real understanding of work-life balance, which helps me make sure I can balance home and work within a supportive structure.”
Jen, Social Worker

“I am proud to be a social worker in Warrington because this is the place where I grew up and the community that shaped me. Working in Warrington also means being surrounded by a strong, supportive team culture. My colleagues are passionate, collaborative, and genuinely committed to making a difference, which creates an environment where we can learn from each other and provide the best possible support to residents. There is also a genuine understanding of work–life balance, which means I can bring my best self to my work while also looking after my own wellbeing.”
Rebecca, experienced social worker

“I very much enjoy working for Warrington, I feel that we have good, person-centred and supportive management. The job is very varied and, as such, every day is different. I enjoy the challenge of working with fluid situations and being able to utilise creativity to maximise the best outcomes for our client group.”
