Fly-tipping of household waste sparks fresh anger at Winwick

MORE than 20 bags of household waste have been discovered dumped on a country lane at Winwick, Warrington, reigniting concerns about persistent fly-tipping in the area.

The rubbish, believed to have been unloaded from a van, was found piled beside a roadside gate along Hermitage Green Lane on a stretch of lane that has long been a known hotspot for illegal dumping.

Local residents say the discovery is particularly frustrating given the efforts made in recent years to deter offenders. Measures, including warning signage and covert cameras, have been installed following repeated incidents.
The matter has been reported to Warrington Borough Council and will now be investigated. Previous fly-tipping incidents on the lane have resulted in prosecutions after evidence was captured by the cameras, giving residents hope that those responsible may again be identified.
Local litter volunteers continue to play a key role in keeping the area clean. Groups such as Winwick Litter Network regularly monitor rural roads and respond quickly when incidents occur.

Cllr Stuart Mann said: “Thank you to residents who continue to stay vigilant and report fly-tipping — it really does make a difference. I also want to recognise the fantastic work of the Winwick Litter Network and the Woody Wombles, who give up their time week after week to keep our village tidy.”
The latest incident comes just ahead of the Great British Spring Clean, with community litter picks planned across Warrington in the coming weeks. Organisers hope the national campaign will once again bring volunteers together and raise awareness about the damage fly-tipping causes to local communities and the environment.
Residents in Winwick and across Warrington are encouraged to report any fly-tipping they see using the council’s online reporting tool:
