Residents reassured as major flood prevention works progress

RESIDENTS turned out in force to learn more about significant drainage and flood prevention works currently ongoing on Old Liverpool Road, Sankey Bridges, Warrington.

The major infrastructure scheme, which started last October, is progressing well says local Cllr. Mo Hussain and remains on track for completion by April 2026.

Designed to significantly reduce surface water flooding, the works focus on long-standing problem areas, particularly around Old Liverpool Road and Sankey Bridges, which have experienced persistent drainage issues over many years.
Key milestones have already been achieved, with Phases A and B on Liverpool Road successfully completed on 30 January 2026. These phases delivered substantial upgrades, including the installation of 15 new gullies, 250 metres of new drainage, 80 metres of linear kerb drainage, four new drainage chambers, and 100 metres of footway reinstatement, alongside the electrical connection to the cabinet current transformer.
Work is now underway on Phase C on Hood Lane, which commenced on 2 February, and includes further installation of drainage infrastructure, gullies and chambers. The final and most complex stage, Phase D, is scheduled to begin on 9 February within Sankey Bridges Industrial Estate. This phase will see the construction of a large pumping station and additional drainage infrastructure, enabling surface water from surrounding roads to outfall into the canal during periods of heavy rainfall—providing vital flood relief for the area.
The scheme is being delivered through a strong partnership between United Utilities, the Environment Agency, and Warrington Borough Council, combining expertise and investment to tackle flooding challenges that have affected the area for years.

To keep residents fully informed, well-attended community drop-in sessions were held at Evelyn Street Primary School and the Bewsey & Dallam Community Hub. Residents were able to speak directly with representatives from all partner organisations, including Warrington Borough Council, the Environment Agency, United Utilities and the Flood Hub, view detailed plans, and ask questions about the works.
Cllr. Hussain, local councillor for Great Sankey South, attended the drop-in session recently and has been providing regular updates to residents throughout the project.
He said: “Residents in Sankey Bridges and the surrounding areas have lived with flooding and drainage problems for far too long. It’s encouraging to see real progress being made and to see such strong partnership working between agencies. Most importantly, it was reassuring to see residents leave these sessions feeling confident that meaningful improvements are finally being delivered.”
Feedback from residents highlighted a strong sense of reassurance and growing confidence that the improvements will lead to lasting benefits for flood resilience, road safety and the wider community.
The scheme has been widely welcomed as a positive step forward, demonstrating how effective collaboration between key agencies can deliver long-term solutions to local infrastructure challenges and improve quality of life for residents in Old Liverpool Road and Sankey Bridges.
