MAYOR of Warrington, Cllr Mo Hussain, is urging everyone to stand together today (Tuesday) – National Holocaust Memorial Day.
The commemorations take place each year on January 27, the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi death camp.
It is a day for everyone to remember the millions of people murdered in the Holocaust, under Nazi persecution, and in the genocides which followed in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur.
The theme for Holocaust Memorial Day 2026, “Bridging Generations”, is a call to action. It reminds us that the responsibility of remembrance does not end with survivors – it lives on through their children, their grandchildren, and through all of us. The theme encourages everyone to engage actively with the past: to listen, to learn, and to carry forward the lessons that history provides. By doing so, we build a bridge between memory and action, between history and hope for the future.
You can take part in Holocaust Memorial Day by joining people across the UK in the Light the Darkness national moment. Each year on January 27 at 8pm, people light candles and place them safely in their windows to:
• remember those who were murdered for who they were
• stand against prejudice and hatred today
Cllr Hussain said: “Holocaust Memorial Day is a powerful reminder of the darkest chapters in human history, but also of our shared responsibility to build a kinder, safer world.
“This year’s theme, ‘Bridging Generations’, urges us not only to remember but to act — to ensure that the stories, the lessons, and the warnings handed down to us are never forgotten. I encourage everyone in Warrington to join the national moment, light a candle, and stand together against hatred in all its forms.”
