More than 3,000 responses were received from local people on Warrington Borough Council’s consultation on the future of Woolston Neighbourhood Hub.
Council officers will now begin the extensive process of reviewing and analysing all representations. Due to the high volume of feedback, this process may take some time.
The feedback will help inform the development of several options, which include a full or partial re-opening of the facility, or permanent closure.
The final decision regarding the future of the Woolston Neighbourhood Hub will be made by the council’s Cabinet. A formal decision is currently expected in early Spring.
The hub – a multi-purpose facility housing a swimming pool, leisure facilities, a library, a GP surgery, and various community organisations – has been partially closed since July and fully closed since September due to structural concerns and the persistent presence of legionella bacteria, which has remained despite comprehensive flushing and disinfection efforts.
The council estimates that the total cost to repair the facility and ensure it is safe for operational use is approximately £3 million.
Deputy Council Leader and cabinet member for communities, culture and leisure, Cllr Jean Flaherty, said: “Like many local authorities across the country, we are facing huge financial pressures. That means we face real difficulties in carrying out the extensive repairs and providing the ongoing subsidies Woolston Neighbourhood Hub needs.
“This consultation has given us the chance to hear the views of our communities and engage with as many local people as possible. Thanks to everyone who has taken part. No decision about the future of the hub has yet been made, and all feedback will be carefully considered before any final recommendation is made.
“I’d also like to thank you in advance for your patience while we work through the many responses we have received, as we work towards finding the most viable path forward.”
