Electric Vehicle (EV) charging tariffs across council-operated car parks and on-street locations are to increase from January.
The new rates, which take effect from 1 January 2026, aim to ensure the continued viability of the local charging network while remaining in line with national averages.
The council has proactively subsidised EV charging costs for several years, to encourage the adoption of low-emission vehicles and support residents in making the switch from petrol and diesel. This initiative has been a significant success, evidenced by a substantial increase in usage across the borough’s charging infrastructure.
However, the cost of maintaining these high levels of subsidy has become financially unsustainable.
The new unified rate of 50p/kWh will apply to the following locations:
- Time Square Multi-Storey Car Park – increasing from 20p/kWh to 50p/kWh
- Warrington West Train Station Car Park – increasing from 20p/kWh to 50p/kWh
- On-street, town centre locations (Connected Kerb) – increasing from 35p/kWh to 50p/kWh
Note: On-street locations include Manchester Road, Bewsey Street, Lexden Street car park, Gladstone Street, and White Street.
The average rate, nationally, for public 7kW charging typically ranges between 45p/kWh and 53p/kWh. Setting the new rate at 50p/kWh, means Warrington’s new tariff remains competitive within the wider UK market.
