TOWN Hall chiefs are being recommended to approve a £899,00 project to combat flooding in Liverpool Road, Warrington.

Members of the borough council’s cabinet will be asked next week to approve the Liverpool Flood Risk Management Project.
The scheme would be funded by a £499,000 contribution from the Environment Agency and £400,000 from United Utilities.
Work would start in October to ensure the council can protect residents from future flooding.

Flooding has taken place in the Liverpool Road/Sankey Bridges area on several occasions, with numerous properties inundated. Residents are said to be subject to high levels of stress and anxiety because of the continued risk of further flooding.
The funding from Environment Agency and United Utilities must be spent in the 2025/26 financial year.
A report to the cabinet states: “There is urgency for this decision as this is a major project, and start date is October 2025 to undertake the project ahead of winter and poor weather. Specialist Pumps from Sweden and large-scale items will need to be ordered as soon as possible in advance of the start of the work.”
A public drop-in session has been held on Liverpool Road to obtain information and comments from the local community affected by repeated flooding events.
The report adds: “This was well attended, by a community clearly suffering the effects of flood anxiety.”
Councillors have been told that as a result of the contributions from the Environment Agency and United Utilities there will be no direct council funding required, although officer time will be required.
Major flooding events have taken place in the Liverpool Road/Sankey Bridges areas in 2007, 2018 and 2021, with as many as 34 properties flooded.
