A four-vehicle Collision on the M56 near Lymm this morning resulted in a vehicle fire causing lengthy delays.
The M56 westbound between J6 at Hale and J8 at Bowdon was closed due to the collision earlier this morning, and although traffic is now being released tailbacks of up to five miles are being reported.
Junction 6 for Manchester airport at the Hale Four Seasons roundabout and junction 7.
Emergency service workers are on-scene.
Cheshire Police said that four vehicles – two HGVs and two cars – were involed in the crash.
“At 6.23am today, Thursday 2 December, police were called to reports of a collision on the M56 westbound between junctions 6 (Manchester Airport) and 7 (Bowden),” an official statement said.
“Officers attended the scene and found the collision involved four vehicles – an HGV, a red Suzuki Swift, a white Iveco HGV and a silver Ford Mondeo. One of the vehicles was on fire as a result of the incident – the fire has since been extinguished.
“There are no reports of any injuries, but the westbound carriageway is currently closed and motorists are advised to avoid the area.”
One of the HGV’s cab was well alight.
Fire Crews tackled the blaze wearing four breathing apparatus and four hose reels. They then dampened down and checked the temperature using a thermal imaging camera.
Matts and soil were used to soak a small amount of oil that had leaked from one of the vehicles.
Ambulance attended and all drivers from each vehicle are believed to have sustained no injuries.
Highways England are arranging recovery of the vehicles.
Road users are advised to follow the Hollow Square diversion signs.
Exit at J6 and follow the link to the eastern roundabout.
Take the first exit and cross over the M56 at the western roundabout.
Take the second exit on to the A538 Hale Road towards Altrincham.
At the junction with the A5144 in Hale turn right. Follow the A5144 Delahays Road northbound.
At the junction with the A560 turn left towards Altrincham. Follow the A560 Shaftesbury Avenue westbound in Altrincham and at the junction with the A56 turn left.
Follow the A56 Dunham Road westbound and remain on this road to Bowdon Roundabout (J7 of M56).
Take the second exit on to the A556 southbound. At the next roundabout take the third exit on to the link road to the A556 southbound.
Keep left to join the link road on to the M56 westbound at J8.
