Young performers invited to train with TV industry professionals

A Warrington-based family-run acting school is preparing to welcome young performers from across the region this summer, led by a mother-and-son team who continue to work professionally in the television industry.

Melanie Ash, founder of Meladrama Acting School, has recently returned from filming a major new television drama in San Sebastián, Spain, while her son, actor Leo Ashton, is currently filming the latest series of Waterloo Road.
Now the pair are turning their attention to inspiring the next generation of performers through Meladrama’s Warrington Summer School, taking place from 10th–14th August at St Wilfrid’s Parish Hall in Grappenhall.
Established in 2005, Meladrama Acting School is a family-run business that has spent more than twenty years helping young people develop confidence, creativity and communication skills through drama.
Alongside the drama school, the family also run CHAOS Actors Management, a Spotlight-approved agency representing young performers across the North West.

Melanie, who began her own acting career as a child and has appeared in television, theatre and film throughout her life, said: “Drama can change lives. Of course we have students who dream of appearing on television or working professionally, but the vast majority join us to make friends, build confidence and discover who they are.
“We see children arrive who are nervous, anxious or struggling to find their place, and over time they grow into confident young people who are happy to speak up, take risks and believe in themselves. That’s what makes this work so rewarding.”
Her son Leo, who has worked professionally since the age of six and has appeared in productions including House of the Dragon, The Bay, Deep Water and Waterloo Road, regularly supports students through workshops, self-tape coaching and industry guidance.
Over the years, former Meladrama students have secured roles in major television productions including Coronation Street, Emmerdale, Waterloo Road, The Bay and numerous national advertising campaigns.
The Warrington Summer School will offer five days of acting, improvisation, comedy, musical theatre, TV and film skills, content creation and performance training, culminating in a final showcase for family and friends.

Meladrama is particularly known for its inclusive and trauma-informed approach, welcoming children of all abilities and backgrounds. Around a third of current students have additional educational needs, with the school placing a strong emphasis on creating a safe, supportive environment where every child can thrive.
The Summer School is open to young people aged 6–17 and will run from 9am until 4pm daily.
Melanie added: “We want every child who walks through our doors to feel that they belong. Whether they dream of starring in a Netflix series or simply want to have fun and make friends during the holidays, there is a place for them here.”
