Between April 2025 and March 2026, Warrington Borough Council’s homelessness team helped 3,496 households in need.
The 12-month snapshot shows that the council helped a range of people, including those who are in or have been in care, prison leavers, survivors of domestic abuse and families facing eviction.
The council is also continuing work to ensure that all families and pregnant households are placed in suitable, high-quality accommodation within six weeks of referral to the service. In this respect, the council now has only six families in B&B accommodation, none of whom have been in place for longer than the statutory six-week period.
Other key achievements this year include:
- 43 new supported accommodation bed spaces created for single people, enabling faster moves out of emergency settings
- The launch of a new Private Rented Sector (PRS) Access Scheme, which has placed 25 households into private rented homes through targeted prevention work
- Strong early success for the Right Home, Right Size downsizing scheme. The scheme helps social housing tenants downsize to more suitable homes, with eight moves completed, eight in progress and 17 households awaiting allocation – freeing up family‑sized homes for homeless families currently in temporary accommodation
This means that the council has enabled a reduction in families spending long periods in emergency accommodation, while also helping more people into stable homes.
Cllr Sue Emery, cabinet member for poverty, inequality and protection, said: “I am incredibly proud of what our homelessness team has achieved. Their determination and creativity have meant fewer families in B&Bs, more people supported into stable homes, and real progress in using our resources more effectively.
This work shows that if residents and families need housing help, the council is there to provide support and advice. These results demonstrate our commitment to prevention, partnership and putting people at the heart of everything we do.”
The council continues to prioritise homelessness prevention and early intervention, while working with partners across housing, health and the voluntary sector to respond to ongoing demand and support residents when at their most vulnerable.
