WARRINGTON Wolves held on to win the first of their trilogy of games against St Helens 14-12.
The two sides meet three times in the next six weeks, and new signing Marc Sneyd’s kicking game proved the difference in this one as Sam Burgess’ side returned to winning ways in Super League.
They led 8-2 at half-time, Sneyd having an immediate impact with a smart kick through that sat up for George Williams to touch down.
A successful captain’s challenge by the home side then set up the field position for them to score through Morgan Knowles, crashing over from close range after breaking a Max Wood tackle.
But just as it seemed Saints were getting on top, a loose pass by Jack Welsby was scooped up by Matty Ashton, who seared down the left touchline and outrun the chasing Tristan Sailor to score a 70 metre effort.
Crucially, Sneyd added the extras to make it 14-8, and that proved to be a winning lead.
St Helens did get a try back before the hour mark, Dayon Sambou acrobatically finishing in the left corner, but they couldn’t find any further points and Warrington came away with the win, and Sneyd the man of the match award.
