A Stockton Heath care home has been rated “Good” in all areas following a recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), although concerns were raised over medicine management, staffing levels and staff morale being low.

The CQC carried out an assessment at the Summerville Care Home between 20 November to 17 December 2024.

Summerville Care Home is a care home registered to provide personal and nursing care for a maximum of 45 people. There were 37 people living at the home at the time of the assessment which was prompted by a review of information held about the service. The overall rating has remained good.
An overview of the assessment by inspectors stated: “We found areas of good practice and some areas of improvement required. For example, improvements were needed with regards to medicines management. Two staff told us there were not enough staff on duty, and staff morale was low. The management team addressed the concerns we raised. The provider had a good learning culture, with accidents and incidents thoroughly reviewed, investigated and analysed to identify trends. People were safeguarded from abuse and staff had received safeguarding training. The provider collaborated effectively with other professionals to deliver coordinated and person-centred care. The environment was safe, with appropriate infection prevention control (IPC) measures in place. Staff were given opportunities to share their views with regards to improvements on the service and seek support from managers.”

People’s experience of this service
People’s experience of living at Summerville Care Home were positive. Inspectors spoke with 3 people and 3 relatives during their assessment. People said they felt safe, were happy and were cared for by staff who knew their support needs and preferences. People said they lived in an environment which was clean and well maintained. People and relatives, inspectors spoke with said their family member were safe and well cared for. Relatives said the provider communicated well with them and always took action to address any concerns.
A spokesperson for Summerville Care Home commented: “The team at Summerville Care Home is continuingly striving to support residents to live their best lives. We are delighted that the hard work of our kind carers has been recognised by the Care Quality Commission at their latest visit, and that their efforts have been reflected in the overall ‘Good’ rating across all categories of their report.
“The feedback of our staff, residents and their loved ones is of paramount importance to us. We were pleased to read the positive comments they had made to inspectors, including that ‘they felt safe, were happy and were cared for by staff who knew their support needs and preferences’.
“We strive to make continuous improvements across all aspects of the home, and we worked quickly to address the few concerns raised by the CQC. It is paramount that we nurture a strong learning culture throughout the home, and we are delighted that this has been recognised by CQC themselves.
“I would like to thank everybody across our home for their commitment and hard work, allowing us to deliver the kind and quality care that our community deserves.”
