Driver arrested after alleged hit-and-run incident on Winwick Road

A driver has been arrested following an alleged hit-and-run incident on Winwick Road this afternoon (Thursday) which caused gridlock in the area.

The incident occurred around 1.20 pm when officers on patrol on the A49 witnessed a crash involving a Renault Modus and a pedestrian, near the roundabout at the junction with Cromwell Avenue and Winwick Road.

A spokesperson for Cheshire Police confirmed: “The driver of the Renault failed to stop and drove off towards Warrington town centre. The vehicle has since been found abandoned near the Range.
“A man has since been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, driving with no insurance and theft of a motor vehicle.”

Winwick Road Southbound was closed from A574 Cromwell Avenue to A50 Long Lane. Winwick Road and surrounding roads including Cromwell Avenue have been gridlocked since the incident.
