Five alternative to the pub for a catch-up with friends

0

So often when we meet friends these days it’s in the pub. In fact, most kinds of social interactions in Britain have been built on the traditional pub, whether it be after-work drinks, Sunday afternoons with loved ones or even celebrations and commiserations.

However, there are tons of alternatives too. Which are perhaps needed more than ever given the volume of people across the UK living with alcohol addiction and in recovery. Many of us these days know someone who is sober and going to the pub can be triggering. So what are the better options for catching up and enjoying some time with friends?

A Coffee Shop Meet-Up

Of course, the most like-for-like alternative is heading to a coffee shop. Like pubs, they provide a relaxed environment for catching up with friends. And what’s more, they have better cakes than pubs too!

Visit any town or city nowadays and you’ll find some great independent coffee shops serving up quality food as well as some of the finest blends, where you can while away the hours and have a proper catch-up without our heads getting fuzzy. At least not from alcohol, anyway!

Take a Walk in Nature

If the weather’s nice, there’s nothing quite like getting some fresh air and taking in local nature. Whether it be visiting the local park, heading out to nearby woodland or taking a riverside walk, you’ll really benefit from the fresh air, gentle exercise and having a good old natter with a friend.

You could even consider somewhere a little further afield for a full day out, taking a picnic or finding a nice cafe for a spot of lunch and really making a special memory.

Try a Shared Activity

If you’re looking to do something a little different, consider your shared interests and plan an activity around that. For example, if you’re both into crafting, why not opt for something like a pottery class or painting workshop.

If you both like exercise, what about trying a track day at a local velodrome or joining a dance or fitness class? These can then become regular weekly or monthly things in which not only do you get to hang out together, but you can also learn new skills or find a new hobby.

Host a Dinner Party or Potluck

Bringing your social gathering into the comfort of your own home is another great way to catch up with friends. Hosting a dinner party or organising a potluck meal allows everyone to contribute a dish, making the event more inclusive and cost-effective.

If cooking feels like too much effort, consider ordering takeaway and playing board games or watching a film together. Home gatherings are also ideal for those who prefer a quieter, more private setting.

Why it works: A home setting offers flexibility and allows for more personal connections without the distractions or expenses of a public venue.

Visit a Cultural Venue

For a more enriching experience, why not catch up with friends at a cultural venue? Art galleries, museums, and exhibitions provide a stimulating environment where you can explore new ideas and share your thoughts with one another. Many of these venues offer free or low-cost entry, making them an accessible option.

You could also attend a live event, such as a comedy show, theatre performance, or music gig. Combining entertainment with conversation adds variety to your gathering and gives you plenty to talk about afterwards.

Why it works: Cultural outings are both enjoyable and thought-provoking, offering an opportunity to bond over shared interests and new discoveries.
