A number of footpath closures have been brought into force to protect members of the public while recovery operations continue following the breach of the Bridgewater Canal near Little Bollington.
Cheshire East Council is continuing to work with partner agencies following the damage to the Bridgewater Canal last week and a number of public footpaths in the surrounding area have now been closed.
This is for health and safety reasons and to protect members of the public while the recovery operation continues.
Notices have been put up in the areas where the closures are and include the plan below (closures marked in purple) of the various footpaths affected, as there are a number of routes that lead into each other. The towpath also remains closed.
The closures will initially be for 21 days but will be kept under review.
A Cheshire East Council spokesperson said: “We continue to ask people to avoid the area and to observe the various closures that are in place – please do not attempt to remove any cordons or barriers. This is for your own safety and for the safety of others.
“Thank you for your patience.”
The breach of the Bridgewater Canal on New Year’s Day devastated the local area and has left many boaters stranded.
Opened originally in the 1770s to provide a trade route from Manchester to the Mersey estuary and the sea beyond.
Since the decline of the canal as a trade route, the Bridgewater Canal has mainly been used by boaters using it for leisure.
