STOCKTON Heath Lawn Tennis Club has been named Cheshire Lawn Tennis Association’s “Club of the Year.”

The award was presented earlier this month when the “great and the good of tennis in Cheshire” descended onto The Pavilion Suite at Chester Racecourse, to celebrate the very best of Cheshire tennis.

All Cheshire LTA Tennis Award winners go through to the LTA Regional Awards and then, if successful, to the LTA National Awards.

Stockton Heath Lawn Tennis Club (SHLTC) stood out as an exceptional candidate for Club of the Year, demonstrating remarkable growth, community engagement, unwavering commitment to inclusivity, and a vibrant atmosphere that fosters both athletic excellence and strong social bonds. The club’s achievements in 2024 paint a vivid picture of a club dedicated to excellence in all aspects of its operation, going far beyond the typical sporting club model.

The past year has witnessed an unprecedented surge in the club’s membership, reflecting a widespread appeal and success in engaging new members across all age groups and skill levels. This expansion was not merely a matter of numbers; it signifies the club’s effectiveness in fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment.
The addition of 15 new senior members during the typically less active winter months is noteworthy. This success can be attributed to several factors, including targeted marketing efforts focusing on the social aspects of the club, the introduction of gentler forms of exercise like walking tennis, and word-of-mouth referrals from satisfied members.
The club has increased its use of social media to better engage with the local community and attract new members, launching successful marketing campaigns using video and images on platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and X resulting in a positive impact on membership numbers.

A 40% increase in junior participation, from 76 to 108 weekly attendees, is a testament to the dedication and expertise of the coaching team. This isn’t just about increased numbers; it reflects a carefully curated program designed to engage young people and foster a love for tennis.
The successful introduction of Pickleball also demonstrates a proactive approach to adapting to evolving sporting trends and catering to diverse interests. The construction of two dedicated Pickleball courts underscores a commitment to providing state-of-the-art facilities.
A commitment to community engagement goes beyond membership growth. The club has actively sought to expand their reach and positively impact the health and well-being of the local community through several key initiatives. They are beginning to partner with local schools, Beavers and Brownies to provide free tennis sessions, introducing children to the sport and fostering future generations of players.
Outreach to the U3A, with successful walking tennis and pickleball taster sessions, demonstrates a dedication to inclusivity and catering to all ages and abilities.
SHLTC is more than just a tennis club; it’s a vibrant social hub that fosters a sense of community and belonging. A diverse range of social events caters to all members, regardless of their tennis skill level.
