APPLETON resident Tom Williams is embarking on a marathon walk to support Warrington’s RM ABC Boxing Club, which is at risk of closing due to financial challenges.
Tom is participating in a tough four-day walk from the boxing gym to the Great Orme in Llandudno, covering 20 miles daily while carrying 15kg and camping in freezing conditions. The goal is to raise £11,250 by the New Year to save the club.
RM ABC Boxing Club, run by Daniel and Sarah, has supported the community for five years despite financial difficulties. They offer free core boxing sessions, organize day trips, and host parties for local children. The couple has even used their life savings to keep the club running, but without paying off their rental arrears, they risk losing their lease.
So far, £255 has been raised towards the £1,000 target.
Commenting on his fund-raiser Tommy said: “I am raising funds in the hope to keep RM ABC Boxing club open. I will be joining RM Boxing club walk from the boxing gym to the great Orme in Llandudno. The walk consists of walking 20 miles a day for four days and camping rough every night in sub freezing temperatures with the added struggle of carrying 15kg on our backs.
“We hope to raise enough funds to be able to keep the club running. We currently need £11,250 by the New Year if we are to succeed.
“You may ask why we need this money and the answer is we first got our lease five years ago in February exactly 2 weeks before the first lockdown. 9 months passed before we could look to any sort of opening with covid restrictions. And the government stop starting Danny working altogether. We accrued around £15,000 in rental arrears since then we have managed to pay some off but now as the lease comes to its end, we have been informed if the outstanding is not paid by New Year no new lease will be given. In adding I would like to mention Daniel and Sarah have partially funded the past five years from their own pockets. The club has never made even close to half of its rent each month, but Danny has paid it and volunteered every single night for the past five years without taking any money from the club he also invested all of their life savings to kit the community club out. They help so many people from all different backgrounds in many different ways, they deliver core boxing sessions completely free of charge, they take kids out on day trips, they arrange parties for kids too. I do believe they have never asked for help before and hope the community appreciate our efforts and can help us save the club. Moving forward should we make the 11,000 we will be taking funding and grants to continue helping the community.
“Any donations are appreciated,” he added.
