A decision is pending on the future of a proposed gypsy traveller transit site at Croft, following a leak revealing the proposed location.
Members of the borough council’s cabinet committee will tonight (Monday) discuss the implications of the identity of the proposed site being leaked by former Labour Cllr Neil Johnson.
A Labour parish councillor took o social media this morning stating that the plan had been scrapped following the leak – but this has been refuted by the borough council, stating it was just “speculation.”
Cllr. Johnson said: “The Council has informed the local press that “no decision” has been made about the gypsy/traveller site in Culcheth and Croft.
“Earlier this morning, Labour parish councillor Cheyvone Bower posted an official statement on Facebook announcing that the Council had decided not to proceed with a gypsy/traveller site in Croft.
“Which is it? What is going on?”
“Where did Cheyvonne Bower get her information from? Why has she announced a decision if none has been made? It feels like we have been thrown back into limbo after being given false hope.
“I am so disappointed in my former Party. I call on them to get their act together. Instead of whispers on Facebook and secret squirrel decisions, we should have a full, open and transparent statement telling us exactly what is going on.
“I have been campaigning all weekend with residents in Culcheth and Croft, making plans, and devising a strategy to oppose this unwanted traveller site. It feels as if the Council are giving us the runaround. I urge the Cabinet to do the right thing, support the community and the residents of Warrington and throw this ridiculous idea in the bin.
“Whatever happens, I will be supporting the residents of my ward as the first Independent councillor for Culcheth, Glazebury and Croft.”
Last week Cllr. Johnson resigned from the Labour Party with immediate effect, in protest at what he described as a “secret plan” by his former party for a gypsy traveller transit site on the border of Culcheth and Croft.
Cllr Johnson (Culcheth, Glazebury and Croft) who is also a member of Culcheth and Glazebury Parish Council, was stunned to learn of plans by Warrington Borough Council to build a transit site, with facilities for members of the gypsy/traveller community, on land at Kenyon Lane, Culcheth. The former Kenyon Lane nurseries are currently listed for sale for £800,000.
The leak caused outrage with local Lib Dems who said it could have put the future of a proposed transit site for the town back another 10 years!
A Warrington Borough Council spokesperson said: “This will be discussed at the Cabinet meeting tonight, after which a decision will be determined. No decision has been made yet, and anything else at this point is just speculation.”
