A student who received praise making face shields for hospital staff during the COVID-19 pandemic as an 11-year-old schoolboy has gone on to excel in his GCSE results, receiving a Distinction 2* for engineering.
Jaycen Ledgerton, who studies at Birchwood High School, received 8 GCSEs at A* and A including Computer Science, Maths, Chemistry, Biology, Physics, English Literature & English Language. He also passed GCSE Further Mathematics and received a Distinction 2* for Engineering.
Only 336 students across the country received a Distinction 2* for WJEC Engineering (3.4%) and only 8.17% achieved A* for OCR GCSE Computer Science.
During the pandemic Jaycen volunteered to make face shields for the hospital staff, keyworkers and local community groups in lockdown with his 3D printer (His own homeschool Design & Technology project incorporating Computing & Engineering).
He received praise from the then Chief Executive of Warrington & Halton Hospitals’ Chief Executive Simon Constable who described the masks as “brilliant.”
Jaycen will now move on to college to study A Level Computer Science, Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics.
Proud Mother, Selena Ledgerton: “I’m always proud of Jaycen, he is genuinely the most thoughtful person I know. He has worked so hard to get the results he wanted and needed and (for many reasons) it hasn’t been easy for him. His wellbeing and happiness have been the priority before study or grades, so I couldn’t be happier for him that he’s come out smiling on all counts! Congratulations and well done son – time to relax and celebrate!”
