WARRINGTON Borough Council has paid tribute to Lord Doug Hoyle, who has passed away yesterday, Sunday, aged 98.
He served as Warrington North MP between 1981 and 1997, when he then moved to the House of Lords. He served in the House of Lords until 2023.
In 2005, Lord Hoyle became a Freeman of the Borough.
Lord Hoyle was also chairman of Warrington Wolves from 1999 to 2009 and became president of the club thereafter. He was a passionate advocate for Rugby League and was hugely popular and respected in the sport both locally and nationally.
Paying tribute to Lord Hoyle, Mayor of Warrington Cllr Steve Wright, said: “Doug will be very fondly remembered by the council and Warrington’s residents and communities. He was a warm, kind and very decent man who worked hard for his constituents.
“He was a great champion for Warrington, its people and of course our Rugby League club.
“We will miss his kindness and great spirit, and I hope that Warrington’s fond remembrance of the impact Doug had on our town will bring comfort to his family and loved ones.”
The flag is currently flying at half-mast at Warrington Town Hall.
