Culcheth man denies farming cannabis plants for commercial purposes

SENTENCE on a Culcheth man who admits growing cannabis plants has been adjourned to establish whether it was a commercial operation.

Tony Cheadle’s lawyer told Liverpool Crown Court yesterday (Thursday) that the defendant disputes the amount of drugs grown.

“He says it was for his own use. The Crown say it was being farmed for commercial purposes,” said Ian Whitehurst, defending.

He said that as there was a dispute in categorisation there would have to be a trial of the issue.

Cecilia Pritchard, prosecuting, said. “I think there would be a significant difference in sentence depending on categorisation.”

District Judge Gwyn Jones agreed that it would have a significant impact on the sentence imposed and adjourned the case until June 7.

Cheadle, of Medway Road, Culcheth was further remanded on bail until that date.
