PLANNING chiefs have nodded through a £4.94 million scheme to modernise Warrington’s Pyramid Arts Centre.

The Grade 2 Listed buildingat the corner of Winmarleigh Street and Palmyra Square South, will undergo extensive alterations inside and externally.
Dating from 1897, the landmark building has previously been law courts and sports hall.
It was converted to an exhibition space in 1989 and remodelled in 2002. It now comprises a performance space, office and function accommodation, a studio theatre and dance studio.
It is operated by charity Culture Warrington to provide arts and heritage events and regularly hosts performances by internationally known artists.

The borough council’s conservation officer says overall, the proposals are acceptable with low impact on the building’s heritage.
“The works will maintain the historic and architectural significance of the building and wider character and appearance of the conservation area whilst providing increased functionality of the building as a public venue.”
The £4.94 million cost of the project will be funded by central government.
