Hedge planting: avoiding invasive species in Warrington

1

Warrington’s gardeners face a crucial choice as hedge planting season begins in the UK. A leading trade body advises against invasive species. These plants, although attractive, can harm our ecosystems.

The Risk of Invasive Species

The Property Care Association (PCA) focuses on two species: Cherry laurel and Japanese rose. Daniel Docking, PCA’s expert, warns of their impact. He urges careful selection during the hedge planting season. These species, while lesser-known, are harmful like Japanese knotweed.

Cherry Laurel’s Impact

It’s important to consider Cherry laurel carefully. This plant thrives in the UK and poses risks when used. It forms dense thickets, outgrowing and overshadowing native plants, thereby harming biodiversity. Moreover, its leaves are toxic to certain animals, which helps it spread in hedge planting areas.

Japanese Rose

When it comes to hedge planting, Japanese rose should be approached with caution. Although it grows fast and is robust, it’s not the best choice. This plant can quickly dominate local flora, disrupting ecosystems and affecting plant diversity.

Gardener’s Role

Furthermore, Daniel Docking highlights the crucial role gardeners play in hedge planting. He strongly advises choosing plants thoughtfully, to ensure they harmonize with the environment. This approach not only helps in maintaining local biodiversity but also prevents the spread of invasive species.

  1. If these plants are so dangerous to our eco system then they should be barred from sale.
Garden centres and on line dealers should be prevented from selling them
