Council again call on Unite Union to end bin strike

WARRINGTON Borough Council has again called on the Unite Union to end the bin strike in Warrington, while talks continue to resolve the dispute.

It follows yesterday’s breakdown in negotiations when the Union said a written agreement from the council had fallen short of their expectactions accusing the council of “dithering” preventing the ballot and members being able to return to work and clear the backlog of bin collections.

It sparked an outburst from Warrington South Mp Andy Carter, who said the strike action was now “unlawful” adding:”“It’s time the Labour Councillors stood up to the Union and took action, through the Courts, to end this situation. Sadly we know they won’t because these now unlawful strikes are being directed from the Unite Union that provide cash to the Labour Party, that fund their election campaigns.”

A Warrington Borough Council spokesperson said: “While the national pay dispute has now concluded, we continue to consider and discuss ways that we can bring an end to the strike action in Warrington.
“Importantly, these discussions are with all three of our recognised trade unions and are through existing, formal channels.
“While these discussions continue we ask again for UNITE to cancel their strike action.”

It is understood the Unite Union are demanding a £1,000 one off payment for refuse workers to be included in their December pay packets.
