Warrington Wolves set up Super League play-off date with St Helens

WARRINGTON Wolves will travel to St Helens in the Super League play-offs after securing a top six spot with a 8-20 win at Huddersfield.

The Wolves started the evening knowing a win would guarantee their season would go on for at least another week, although in the end it mattered little, as their only rivals Salford were beaten at home by Catalans.

That result also helped to ensure Saints couldn’t reach the top two and so they will instead host the Wolves in a reverse of last week’s closely fought league fixture.

It was a gritty win for Warrington at Huddersfield, where the two sides scored two tries apiece but Stefan Ratchford’s goal kicking proved the difference between the two sides.

He kicked four penalties, as well as two conversions, to add to tries from Matt Dufty and James Harrison.

For the Giants, a disappointing season for them was rounded off with tries from outgoing duo Chris McQueen, who is retiring, and young full-back Will Pryce who is heading to the NRL.

Warrington were boosted by the return of George Williams, who sat out the 18-6 defeat to Saints last week, although were missing talisman forward Paul Vaughan, controversially handed a four match ban for an incident in that match.

In the other play-off game next week, Hull KR will host Leigh Leopards.

Wigan Warriors secured top spot in the table, and they and Catalans Dragons go straight through to the semi-finals.

The tie between St Helens and Warrington is likely to be next Saturday, September 30, live on Channel 4.

Huddersfield: Pryce; Halsall, Marsters, Naiqama, McGillvary; Connor, Lolohea; Ikahihifo, Milner, Greenwood, Hewitt, McQueen, Yates. Interchanges: Peats, Wilson, English, Cudjoe.

Warrington: Dufty; Thewlis, Wrench, Ratchford, Russell; Williams, Drinkwater; Mikaele, Walker, Harrison, Currie, Nicholson, Crowther. Interchanges: D Clark, Kasiano, Philbin, Bullock.
