Warrington Wolves suffer Golden Point heartbreak at Salford

WARRINGTON Wolves suffered Golden Point heartbreak as they went down 24-20 in a thrilling top-six contest at Salford Red Devils.

Warrington got off to a flying start as Salford dropped a high ball and Matty Nicholson scooped up to score after just three minutes with Stefan Ratchford adding the extras to make it 0-6.

The hosts thought they had scored on eight minutes but the video ref ruled No Try for Salford’s Deon Cross.

On 19 minutes it was Warrington’s turn to be disappointed as Ratchford went over but the try was ruled out for a forward pass in the build-up play.

on 23 minutes Salford were level with a Ben Hellewell try converted by Marc Sneyd and then took the lead on 31 minutes through Brodie Croft with Sneyd converting again to make it 12-6 at half time.

Warrington hit back after the re-start on 44 minutes when Ken Sio dropped a high kick to the corner and Ben Currie capitalised with Ratchford again on target to level things up. On 54 minutes Wire took a slender lead as Ratchford added a penalty goal following a high tackle on Matty Nicholson to make it 12-14.

Back came Salford on 64 minutes with a try for Brodie Croft which Sneyd converted to make it 18-14.

On 70 minutes George Williams linked up with Dufty to score and Ratchford’s conversion nosed Warrington back in front. With the clock ticking down Sneyd landed a penalty goal to level the contest 20-20 up heading into the final 5 minutes!

Neither side could add to their tally as the game headed into the golden point.
In the 83rd minute, Sneyd hit the upright with a drop goal attempt and then in the 84th minute, Sam Stone broke Warrington’s heart with the match-winning try to make it 24-20 to end a thrilling contest.
