New crossing secured for busy road

LOCAL councillors have helped secure a new pedestrian crossing on a busy road following concerns raised by residents.

Cllrs. Sagheer Zaman, Tony Higgins, and Jean Flaherty have confirmed that Marsh House Lane will see the introduction of a new pedestrian crossing by the busy Peninsula Barracks junction with O’Leary Street.

Following concerns raised by residents and parents of children from Beamont Primary School, the local councillors worked with Council officers to identify safer options, including the introduction of a new signal-controlled crossing.

The new pedestrian crossing is expected to be constructed during the school summer holidays, helping to minimise disruption, and is expected to be operational by late September 2023. The Labour councillors have said that they expect the new signal-controlled crossing will make it easier for local children to get to school safely and will help other road users on one of the busiest roads in their ward.

Cllr Zaman said:”This is fantastic news for the community living nearby to the Barracks.
“As your Labour councillors, we have worked hard for this, putting the case forward to officers and now delivering on the new crossing. Improving accessibility and making it safer for children to cross the road at this busy junction has been something high on our agenda.
“Earlier this year, we were successful in having Wig-Wag signs on Marsh house lane to make drivers aware of school crossing ahead, reducing car idling and improving safety for Beamont Primary students. When our residents come to us with their concerns, we listen, and we work hard to address them.”

Cllr Higgins added:”As your ward councillors, I’m pleased that we have been able to deliver on the promises we made of improving accessibility across Marsh House Lane. Those who live nearby or have children in Beamont Primary will know just how busy the junction can get. By investing in this new crossing, we are improving the safety for everyone who uses the road.”

Cllr Flaherty said:”I am thrilled and relieved that we have been able to secure the necessary funding to allow this essential project to go ahead. Improving road safety for our residents, especially our children, is incredibly important to us.”
