UPDATED: LENGTHY delays are set to continue on M6 after the northbound carriageway due to an infrastructure defect, involving land subsidence along the embankment, discovered during overnight planned roadworks.
The M6 was closed northbound between J18 (Holmes Chapel) and J19 (Knutsford) due to the infrastructure defect. Specialist engineers were sent to the scene and working to assess the damage and reopen the road as soon as it is safe. One of four lanes remains closed but delays are ongoing.
National Highways is advising drivers to expect significant delays with one lane remaining closed. The entry slip road at junction 18 also remains closed.
A specialist engineer has carried out an inspection on land subsidence along the embankment, and repairs will be taking place. A large, temporary barrier is also being installed for the protection of HGVs while work is completed.
Significant delays are expected, and road users are advised to plan their journeys and if possible avoid the area at peak times.
