OUTGOING Mayor Cllr Jean Flaherty will today, Friday, have the rare honour of taking the salute at Warrington Walking Day for a second time on her final day in office.
As she stands down from her official duties after the event, she will make way for incoming Mayor Cllr Steve Wright, who will be taking part in the walk with thousands of other local residents, before taking up the chains of office for a second time.
It will be Cllr Flaherty’s 69th Walking Day and Warrington Worldwide will be covering the event live on our Facebook Page – and updating this page with photographs throughout the day.
This year’s event is believed to be the 187th time the walk has taken place. Last year’s walk was the first after an absence of three events due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Warrington Walking Day was originally founded by a former Rector of Warrington as a counter-attraction to Newton Races which, he believed, were attracting many townsfolk to gambling and drink.
Newton Races died out years ago – but the great Walk of Christian Witness continues.
