Warrington Wolves confirm departure of Australian forward Josh McGuire

WARRINGTON Wolves have confirmed that they have released Australian forward Josh McGuire, after he was handed a massive 12-match ban recently.

McGuire, 33, was only recruited in the off-season from NRL club St George Illawarra Dragons, but he missed the first seven games of the season after receiving a suspension in the pre-season friendly against Leigh.

After a relatively forgettable seven games in the primrose and blue, McGuire was suspended following an incident in what turned out to be his final game – the recent defeat away at Leigh.

He was found guilty by the RFL of using acceptable language towards Leigh winger Josh Charnley and handed one of the longest bans in Super League history.

Speculation over his future soon followed, and it has now been confirmed he has left the club.

A statement read: “Warrington Wolves can confirm that Josh McGuire has left the club by mutual agreement with immediate effect.

“McGuire has now returned to Australia with his family. We wish Josh well in his next chapter.”

He is the second overseas forward Warrington have lost this season, following Thomas Mikaele’s departure to Gold Coast Titans for compassionate reasons.

Despite recent indifferent form, the Wolves are still second in Super League, level on points with leaders Catalans.

But they suffered a disappointing exit in the Challenge Cup at the weekend, losing 14-12 against a Wigan side that played most of the match with 12 men.
