Tory Chairman calls for Labour MP to resign over offensive “hate” tweet

THE Chairman of Warrington Conservatives has called on Warrington North MP Charlotte Nichols to resign following an offensive tweet at the Neighbourhood Weekender Festival which he described as an “incitement of hate.”

But the MP has defended her tweet, even appearing on Talk TV in what Tories described as a “car crash interview,” blaming members of the crowd chanting “f*ck the Tories” on 13 years of failures by the Government.

Posting on twitter from the event in response to the chants Ms Nichols tweeted “I can’t lie, I absolutely LOVE to see it! Love you Warrington.”

Calling for Ms Nichols to resign the Chairman of Warrington Conservatives, Theo Mirfin commented: “The Labour MP for Warrington North is the first to talk and complain about inappropriate social media tweets as it has ‘whipped up hatred towards her’ yet here we are again with more offensive and bizarre behaviour from Ms Nichols. Instead of withdrawing the tweet, she then decides to give a car crash interview on the Independent Republic of Mike Graham on Talk TV which has left many of our residents feeling very uncomfortable. Ms Nichols has the privilege to debate in the chamber at Westminster on behalf of her constituents and as Mike Graham said quite correctly if she repeated her ‘hate’ mantra in there she’d be asked to leave the chamber. Why should her conduct on her certified page fall short of what standards are expected of elected representatives?
Mr Mirfin added:” “This isn’t a one-off episode; we’ve had even more inappropriate comments on social media in the past. However, this latest incitement of hate shown is totally shocking. Warrington deserves better, Labour deserves better, Ms Nichols needs to tender her resignation and apologise to the people of Warrington. She has no mandate to speak on their behalf.”

In response Ms Nichols said: “I’ve been at sporting events where the same chanting has taken place and Conservative MPs present have joined in with it, joking that you can interpret the statement one of two ways- clearly they have a better sense of humour than some of those pearl clutching over the weekend, and yet somehow it is the political left who get characterised as “snowflakes”.
“People are understandably fed up after 13 years of this Government and the litany of ways they have failed our country and our community- from foodbank demand soaring, to sewage in our rivers, to NHS waiting times, no new hospital for Warrington despite all the assurances, and partying in Number 10 while people couldn’t say goodbye to their dying loved ones. Festival goers have every right to express that, as they did, and the only thing I encourage is people turning their anger in the right direction at those responsible for the mess we’re in and not all those the Tories try to blame and scapegoat for their own failures. The sooner we have a General Election, people won’t need to express that frustration in song form as they can do so at the ballot box instead!”
