ALMOST 28 years after appearing at the inaugural V Festival in sweltering heat on Sunday, August 18, 1996 at Warrington’s Victoria Park, Britpop royalty, Pulp, are set to make their long awaited return to the stage, headlining at the Neighbourhood Weekend Festival.
While Temperatures are highly unlikely to hit 90 degrees Fahrenheit like they did when Pulp performed along with Supergrass and Gary Numan, the weather forecast is good with work well now advanced on preparing for this weekend’s event.
The original V Festival was the brainchild of Warrington’s own Simon Moran, whose SJM Concerts promoted the event – the same promoters behind Neighbourhood Weekender.
The idea for the V Festival came in 1995 when Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker announced that he would love to play two outdoor venues in two days. The band’s promoters got together and came up with the idea of putting the concert into Victoria Park in Warrington and Hylands Park in Chelmsford so that fans in both north and south would have a chance to see the band.
Now Cocker and his bandmates can take a long awaited trip dowen memory lane in Warrington as Neighbourhood Weekender returns with an impressive billing.
Cocker and co delighted fans a few months back, when they announced the group’s first shows in 11 years. They headline on Sunday night, with the likes of Self Esteem, Anne-Marie, Sea Girls and Confidence Man also playing throughout the day.
Meanwhile Saturday sees Paul Heaton with special guest Rianne Downey, and The Kooks co-headlining. Joining them are The Wombats, Ocean Colour Scene, Jamie Webster, Sugababes and The Enemy, among others.
