How to prepare for a long road trip

0

Whether you’re taking a road trip with friends, your partner or your family, it’s best to be prepared. From budget planning to organising day trips and food, road tripping can take a lot of prep work. However, it doesn’t have to be a chore. Below we’ve compiled your go to checklist to help you prep for your journey on the road.

Vehicle preparation

Before any long drive, it’s always a good idea to have your vehicle checked over for any immediate problems with the brakes, air conditioning, tire pressure etc. If you’re travelling by car or motorhome, ensure any child seats are secure and safe, and take an inventory of things you may need to take with you on your trip. Some great road trip items to consider adding to your checklist are:

  • Antibacterial wipes
  • Blankets and cushions
  • Emergency charging banks for your phones
  • A first aid kit
  • A torch

Have the essential documents

When heading out on the road, we recommend having the important documents on hand and ready whenever you need them. This includes information about your vehicle, such as car or van insurance, your travel insurance if you need it and the information of your breakdown cover and who you need to call should you have an accident on the road.

Download travel apps

Although old school maps are fun to have on road trips, and assist in a pinch if you get lost with no signal, it may be best to consider downloading travel apps that help map out your journey and offer assistance when you need it the most. Some can even give you hints on the best places in the area for coffee or lunch!

Bring car or van friendly activities

This could include headphones for listening to music or movies on your phone, apps and games to keep the kids occupies or colouring books if phones and tablets run out of juice. Some great ideas for activities include family car bingo and card games that the whole family can play!

Pack snacks and plenty of fluids

This is a given for any road trip, but make sure you have enough fluids and snacks to keep you all going on the road. For the driver, this could be accessible fruits and snacks that aren’t a hassle to eat, such as crisps or apples. Oranges and grapes are also a great idea when it comes to road trip snacks, as they’re durable and can last quite a while on the road!
