Edith dies at 102 – still enjoying her life at Lymm

ONE of the Warrington area’s oldest residents, Edith McHardy, has died aged 102.

For the last eight years she was a resident at The Limes, in Booths Hill Close, Lymm, where, despite being registered blind, she was an active member of the community.

A former teacher, she had previously lived in north Warrington but moved to Lymm to be near her family.
But she was born at Up Holland, near Wigan – and went back there occasionally because she regarded it as “a pretty little village.”
She taught for 35 years, starting her career in Stockport before moving back to teach at a school in Up Holland, where she clearly made an impression because she married the head teacher!
Her earliest memories are of being bounced on her father’s knee – “he thought I was cuddly” she said.
Edith celebrated her 100th birthday during the Covid lockdown, enjoying a socially-distanced party in the garden at The Limes
She had clear memories of World War Two but thought living through the pandemic was far worse.
Edith had a marvelous memory and a keen mind – she nearly always won quiz competitions.

When asked what her recipe was for a long life, she replied, with a twinkle in her eye: “I enjoy a little drop of brandy going to bed.”
Edith really enjoyed the kindness and generosity of the Lymm and Warrington communities and her family wish to thank all those who made her last years some of the happiest of her life – the carers who looked after her, Lymm Rotary Club, the Youth Club Wednesday Lunch Team, the VIP Centre, the Independent Methodist Church and many others.
The funeral will be at Walton Lea Crematorium at 2.40 pm on Wednesday, October 5.
